This course is for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment to have onboard and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. Unnecessary transmissions could block out a Mayday distress call. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
We estimate that this online course will take 6-8 hours.
There is a VHF handbook that is included with the course and we will send you a ebook redemption code to access this. If you prefer a physical book then please let us know (post is extra) or you can pick one up from our centre.
We will email you a personal username and password. You will be given tutorials on the site but you can also email our instructors with the link on the training site if you need any further assistance.
Once you complete the course there is a test to make sure all is understood and that you are ready for the VHF exam. Please print the certificate at the end of the course and contact us to arrange your exam. For the exam there is a £60 fee payable to the RYA.
