Advice

  • Aim to complete at least the first 2 weekends of the theory course before starting the practical.

Course Information, options and dates

Theory Course

The Day Skipper Theory course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate safely around familiar waters by day. It is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers and is an essential preparation for our RYA Day Skipper Practical course.

  • The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is run over 3 weekends totalling 5 days
  • Each day runs 1000 till 1700 unless advised otherwise

This course is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers and is an essential preparation for our RYA Day Skipper Practical course.

The Day Skipper Theory Course Content

The first weekend, part 1 includes:

Day 1

  • Seamanship
  • Chart familiarisation
  • Tidal heights

Day 2

  • Tidal streams
  • Secondary ports
  • Position fixing
  • Dead reckoning
  • Estimated position

The second weekend, part 2 includes:

Day 3

  • Course to steer
  • Using the GPS
  • Chart work exam

Day 4

  • Buoyage & pilotage
  • Safety
  • Meterology
  • Passage planning
  • Collision regulations

The third weekend, part 3 includes:

Day 5

  • Passage making
  • General exam

Course Objective: You will be able to navigate around familiar waters by day

Course Assessment: Two exam papers

Prerequisite: Competent Crew Practical or equivalent experience

Learn to skipper a short passage with the instructor on hand to give tuition, advice and ensure your personal safety. The RYA Day Skipper qualification confirms that the successful candidate has the knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on shorter, coastal cruises during daylight.

 

At the end of this course you will be licensed to skipper your own boat and charter a boat both in the UK or abroad.

On the RYA Day Skipper Practical Course you will gain further experience through planning and completing passages, including a night sail. You will also gain your ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You will also practice lots of close quarter handling skills and mooring in a range of marinas – offering more interesting ways to tie up for the night!

Before taking the Day Skipper practical course you should make sure you have completed RYA Day Skipper Theory and RYA Competent Crew courses or have equivalent experience.

Course Objective: Gain RYA Day Skipper certificate .You will be licensed to skipper your own boat and charter a boat both in the UK or abroad.

Day Skipper Course Prerequisite: Completed part 1 and part 2 of Day Skipper Theory.

Weekend Course

Run on Beneteau First 35 or 36

Available over 3 weekends

Flexibility to mix and match your weekends to spread out over whole winter or 3 consecutive weekends

Run from Brighton, 0900 to 1700 each day with one weekend including an evening sail till 2000.

Weekend dates – All weekends are run from Brighton 0900 to 1700 each day. The second weekend will include an evening sail until 2000 on the Saturday.

The second weekend includes an evening sail on the Saturday. The course runs from Brighton Marina 0900 till 2000 Saturday and 0900 till 1700 Sunday.

The third weekend runs form Brighton Marina starting at 0900 till 1700 Saturday and Sunday.
