Dayskipper Theory  with Lagoon Watersports

This course is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers and is an essential preparation for our RYA Day Skipper Practical course. We run our courses in our classroom from Brighton Marina. The Day Skipper Theory Course is divided into three weekends.

The first weekend, part 1 includes:

Day 1

  • Seamanship
  • Chart familiarisation
  • Tidal heights

Day 2

  • Tidal streams
  • Secondary ports
  • Position fixing
  • Dead reckoning
  • Estimated position

The second weekend, part 2 includes:

Day 3

  • Course to steer
  • Using the GPS
  • Chart work exam

Day 4

  • Buoyage & pilotage
  • Safety
  • Meterology
  • Passage planning
  • Collision regulations

The third weekend, part 3 includes:

Day 5

  • Passage making
  • General exam

Course Objective: You will be able to navigate around familiar waters by day

Course Assessment: Two exam papers

Prerequisite: Competent Crew Practical or equivalent experience

It is a legal requirement that someone onboard has a VHF license and this course teaches basic radio operation and what to do in situations of distress and emergencies. It is extremely beneficial to learn how to use a VHF as it is one of the most important safety features on any boat. We run this course from our classroom in Brighton Marina.

Course Content Includes: 

    •    The basics of radio operation 
    •    Emergency position  
    •    Distress, emergency and medical assistant procedures 
    •    Ship to shore calls 
    •    Global maritime distress and safety system 
    •    Search and rescue 
    •    The correct frequencies to use 
    •    Digital selective calling

Course Objective: You will understand basic procedures and how to operate a VHF Radio. 

Course Assessment: There is a short written exam at the end of the course. Please note the exam fee is £60 made payable to the RYA. 

Prerequisite: Knowledge of phonetic alphabet & passport photo

In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. On this practical course you will get the chance to move out of the classroom and work through different emergency scenarios on our boats, all the time gaining valuable information in a more realistic environment.  Yes you can put someone into the recovery position in a spacious classroom, but how about in the cockpit of a yacht, or near the engine bay of a motorcrusier!

From our Brighton classroom you will learn about:

RYA Sea Survival Course with Lagoon Watersports

The RYA Sea Survival course is designed for all small craft users, giving a controlled practical experience with safety equipment and life rafts to students. It is important to have the knowledge to survive if you end up in an emergency situation at sea. It is a well proven fact that people with appropriate training are more likely to survive. 

During the 1 day course, you will spend some time in a pool experiencing launching, flipping, entering Life rafts, alongside familiarization with all life raft equipment and survival techniques. This course covers:

  • Search and rescue operations
  • Use of life rafts and associated safety and distress equipment
  • Survival techniques 
  • Search & rescue techniques
  • Dealing with hypothermia
  • Design of life jackets

What to bring: Students are encouraged to bring along their own wet weather gear and life jacket in order to experience first hand the problems of entering and assisting the entrance of others, into an inflated and uncooperative life raft whilst fully kitted out. But we can also provide wet weather gear and life jackets.

RYA/ISAF Offshore Safety Course

The one day RYA/ISAF Offshore Safety course equips both racers and cruisers with the skills and knowledge necessary to both prevent and deal with emergencies offshore. This course is required for many offshore races, however it is also useful for those taking part in any blue water sailing. In order to obtain the full ISAF Offshore Safety Certification students will need to complete both this course and the one day RYA Sea Survival course. The course satisfies the training required by ISAF Offshore Special Regulations 6.01 for category 0, 1 and some category 2 offshore races.

The RYA/ISAF Offshore Safety course is split between both theoretical and practical hands on training. Subjects covered include:

  • Care & Maintenance of Safety Equipment
  • Storm Sails
  • Damage Control
  • Crew Routines
  • Man Overboard Prevention and Recovery
  • Giving Assistance to other craft
  • SAR Organisation and Methods
  • Practical Fire Precautions and Fire Fighting
  • Distress Alerting and Survivor Location Aids

Course Objective: This practical course designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed to handle offshore emergencies.

Additional Information: Whilst this can be taken as a stand alone course in order to issue the full ISAF certificate candidates are also required to attend RYA Sea Survival Course.
