With such a stormy winter this year the sailing season feels a long way off. But all is not lost, you can still use the winter time to cover theory in preparation for the practical courses in the summer. Lagoon Watersports offer a variety of essential and comprehensive theory courses run in the classroom or online over the winter months.
If you are planning to charter or skipper your own boat this summer then you will need your RYA Day Skipper certificate. The RYA Day Skipper involves five days of theory training followed by five days of practical training onboard the boat. We offer flexible courses to suit your schedule and you can complete the entire course over several months or over consecutive weekends or in one continuous 9 day course.
The Dayskipper Theory course includes essential navigation and exercise packs. You will be introduced to charts that cover interesting and challenging navigation areas with a training almanac, which creates a realistic scenario to the exercises. The chart work will involve identifying symbols and plotting courses, you will also get plenty of practice with passage planning, pilotage, tides, calculating heights, tidal streams, weather forecasting, identifying clouds types, rules of the road and emergency situations. Completing these exercises highlights common navigational errors so if you are going to make any mistakes you will do it in the safety of a classroom and not on the boat.
The Dayskipper course we run is for both Sail and Motor. There are two 90 minute exams that cover chart work and general knowledge. The instructor marks the exam paper and any mistakes will be identified and if the instructor feels you have not understood a certain topic then they might ask you to complete some more training before trying the exam again. We ensure everyone is up to the standard required to be a competent Day Skipper.
Other shorter and very useful RYA theory courses to consider over the winter include the online VHF course and The Essential Navigation course. The VHF license is a legal requirement on any boat. The Essential Navigation course is another excellent online course if you do not need the full Day skipper course, it is particularly relevant to power boaters and dinghy sailors.
“Quality of skipper has been exceptional. I have had a fun and informative few weeks and would highly recommend”
“Very enjoyable course, great instructor and facilities, learnt a huge amount”
“I just wanted to say what a fantastic experience the comp crew course was! I can’t believe how much hands on sailing there was -that sounds a bit daft but I’ve learnt so much and am thrilled…
I can safely say I will NEVER be going out in a Force 7 out of choice but it was brilliant to have experienced it in case I ever get caught out.
Anna was an outstanding skipper, and I loved the whole thing – so thank you! It was the first thing I have done that has stretched me for literally years – and I’m definitely coming back for more.”
