    FAQ’s

We have an experienced and professional team of instructors that teach: RYA Start Yachting, RYA Competent Crew, RYA Dayskipper, RYA Coastal Skipper and RYA Yachtmaster.

RYA Competent Crew. This a 5 day practical course. Or for a taster the two day weekend RYA Start Yachting course.

The RYA Dayskipper. To start the RYA Dayskipper you will need your 5 day practical Competent Crew or equivalent experience. The Dayskipper entail 5 days of theory in the classroom and 5 days practical onboard the yacht. You will also need your VHF license which you can do with us online.

We have a Beneteau 36.7 and a Beneteau First 35.

The maximum on a yacht courses is 5 persons

The yacht courses run either Mon-Fri or over weekends from February to November.

If you are doing a weekday course you stay onboard the yacht. If you are doing the weekend courses, usually over the first weekend you do not stay onboard but the second long weekend you will stay onboard.

The courses start from our base in Brighton Marina: Pontoon 6, Brighton Marina, Brighton, East Sussex BN2 5UP, UK.

Weekend Part 1: We sail around the Brighton area.
Weekend Part 2: We sail to destinations such as Newhaven, Shoreham, Littlehampton and Eastbourne
Mon-Fri: We sail to France or the Solent

Food is not provided for the weekend Part 1 courses. For the weekend Part 2 and weekday Mon-Fri, various meals are provided. An exact breakdown will be given to you in our joining instructions.

We provide specialist equipment. In the winter months it can be cold, thermals, fleeces, woolly hats are all useful to have. During the summer months bring sun hats, sun block and sun glasses. Quick drying clothes can be very practical instead of jeans and good none slip, non marking footwear. Trainers often work well. We hire out our Musto waterproofs if required. If you are staying onboard the yacht you will need to bring sleeping bag and a pillow and possibly your passport for the week day practical courses.

Part of the enjoyment of sailing is being out in the elements, so it is important to be versatile to make the best of the conditions. If we cannot sail on a day due to weather conditions we will endeavour to cover theory and other useful skills such as mooring practice. At times we might cut short a course in which case you will be offered further days at another suitable time.

Yes, we offer Own Boat Tuition in all the RYA yacht courses. We will give you a check list of equipment you will need onboard and we can assign one of our qualified instructors to teach on your boat. If you do not have a berth in Brighton Marina our instructor can travel to your boat.

You can join for part 1 or part 2 of a weekend course to refresh yourself. We also do mile-building trips and race events such as Round the Island and Royal Escape - we are often looking for crew. We also have our Coastal Sailing Club for more information go to www.lagoon.co.uk/coastal-sailing-club/
