KIDS WATERSPORTS GUIDE Harvey Dawkins2018-02-09T11:51:27+00:00 There are many benefits to getting children out on the water – from staying active, developing new skills, learning about the environment and meeting new friends, the list goes on. Being on the water is a great place for children to be and offers endless excitement and a number of challenges and opportunities. Sometimes being on the water can seem dangerous, but if you use the correct channels, equipment and tuition; safety is never compromised. There are lots of ways to get your kids on the water and living right next door to the coast, gives you the best place to start and a number of options. The best advice is to get some professional watersports training, which will ensure that your children get the best start possible with all the necessary equipment. There are a number of watersports appropriate for children and picking the most suitable one can be confusing. Below is a watersports guide to help pick the best watersport for your child. Watersports Guide for Parents Swimming – Start early. Unquestionably the best water skill to learn, and the ultimate in water safety. Swimming will build their confidence and help keep them safe in the water. Most swimming pools offer children’s swimming lessons, choose from group or individual lessons. After the lessons why not get them to join a swimming club – great for meeting new friends and really build their swimming confidence. Sailing – A great watersport to start with. Sailing offers fun, excitement and lots of challenges. Sailing is often successful because the majority of the time they stay out of the water in their boats and keep warm. The boats are easy to control, so the kids are instantly engaged and they can sail with their friends. Lagoon Watersports offers training in groups or an individual lesson. Most kids start with a RYA Dinghy Stage 1 course which is suitable for children aged 6+ and will teach them all the basic sailing skills and safety considerations, whist having fun and meeting new friends. It doesn’t stop at courses, we offer a weekly watersports club, which will keep their interest in the sport by racing, learning new skills, and socialising. Windsurfing – A watersport with lots of challenges in store! Windsurfing is great fun and kids love it. There’s a lot to learn and it never gets boring. Windsurfing is a diverse sport and has many different disciplines such as freestyle, wave sailing and racing. The best course to start with is the RYA windsurf Stage 1 course, suitable for ages 8+, in which children will learn all the necessary skills to get up and start windsurfing. There is also options to have individual lessons. After your child has completed the course why not join a kids watersports club – these are a great way to keep your children on the water and continuing to improve their newly found skills, with some new friends. Kids club is held once a week Lagoon Watersports. Wakeboarding – For the more thrill seeking kids out there this is the watersport for them. Wakeboarding is amazing fun and relatively easy to learn. Be warned it is highly addictive! If your kid loves to skateboard then they will love this. Lagoon Watersports offer courses or private tuition, one of the best ways to learn is joining a BWSW bronze wakeboarding courses, which will get them up and going in no time! We also offer a kids wakeboard club to improve their skills and meet new friends. Kids Activity Weeks – Kids activity week is a week long course where children will experience the thrills of windsurfing, sailing, open top canoeing, cable wakeboarding, a speedboat ride and activities such as team challenges and treasure hunts. Lagoon Watersports Kids Activity Weeks are a now in their 11th year of running and hugely popular with kids and parents alike. Packed with sporting activities that combine fun, exciting and skillful antics both on the water and land, they are guaranteed to keep the kids out of mischief during the school holidays! The Lagoon is the ideal starting point for all watersports as we have an enclosed, shallow area to build both confidence and skills before taking to the perhaps more exciting area of the sea!
